Franklin Shepard is the protagonist of Merrily We Roll Along (Sondheim/Furth)[1]

Franklin Shepard is a musical composer turned film producer, usually referred to as "Frank".[2] He is first married to Beth Spencer, then Gussie Carnegie, then, in some versions, Meg Kincaid. He is said to be from Chicago and went to high school with Charley Kringas. He also has a close relationship with Mary Flynn and is friends with most of the other characters in most versions of the show. He served in the military for two years, and went to Julliard. He was born sometime from 1935 to 1938timeline. Frank has at least one child with Beth Spencer, Frank Jr., though in earlier versions he has two.

Frank is treated by the other characters as a strong composer. He wrote the score for Musical Husbands, and Sweet Sorrow1985 and in some versions, another show. All the shows were produced by Joe Josephson. He wrote music for Frankly Frank as well as unproduced adaption of Charley's play, Pretty Politics, called Take a Left.1985
